Mental health is an important issue to the general population and even in the science community. With this awareness, we are surveying our planetary science community to have a better understanding of how it is doing in terms of stress, depression, and anxiety as well as the factors contributing to people's symptoms. If you decide to participate, please follow the link below. The survey takes about 10-15 minutes and the information generated will be anonymous. We appreciate you giving us your valuable time to be involved in this important matter. If possible, we ask that you send this survey to people within your institution, department, and colleagues who are also a part of the planetary science community so that we can ensure that everyone is included and heard. https://forms.gle/sHDmdEPE51uNCsTZ6 If you have any other questions or concerns, you can contact: Dr. David Trang at dtrang@hawaii.edu 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 AGU PLANETARY SCIENCES SECTION MEMBERSHIP SURVEY The AGU Planetary Sciences Section is soliciting feedback to evaluate how the Section is working for its members, and how planetary sciences fit within AGU and its new Strategic Plan generally. The survey should take no more than about 20 minutes to complete, and will remain open until Monday, 4 December 2023. Results will be summarized at the AGU Annual Meeting on Tuesday, 12 December 2023 and in future emails. You can access the survey here: https://tinyurl.com/AGUPSSurvey 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3 FINAL VERSION OF THE ORIGINS, WORLDS, AND LIFE DECADAL SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE The National Academies' Space Studies Board is pleased to announce that the final version of Origins, Worlds, and Line (OWL): A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023-2032, complete with all figures, is now available for download at: https://tinyurl.com/Decadal23 A limited number of printed copies will be available free of charge, while supplies last. While it is possible that organisms may exist in the subsurface liquid water oceans of Europa or Enceladus today, questions remain about how evidence of that life might be chemically or physically modified upon transport from subsurface to surface (or space, for the Enceladus plume). Changes in physical and chemical conditions such as temperature, pressure, and salinity, as well as exposure to radiation or impact gardening, might obscure biosignatures or make their interpretation challenging. This session invites presentations covering the detection and preservation of biosignatures from ocean worlds as they are transported to locations where current or future missions might search for them. Experimental studies, theoretical modeling, field work, and mission/instrument analyses are all welcome. https://tinyurl.com/4wbuybd4 Conveners: Morgan Cable (NASA JPL), Tori Hoehler (NASA ARC), Bethany Theiling (NASA GSFC), and Rob Hodyss (NASA JPL) Abstract Deadline: Wednesday, January 10, 2024 1-page abstract template (download): https://tinyurl.com/yr2677fc AbSciCon 2024 will take place in Providence, RI, USA and online on May 5-10, 2024 8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8 ABSCICON 2024 SESSION: TITAN PREBIOTIC CHEMISTRY - SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE Titan represents a prebiotic chemical laboratory on a planetary scale. Recent work exploring physical and chemical processes occurring in Titan's varied surface terrains, including deposition from photochemically-produced species in the atmosphere and exchange with subsurface materials, is important to understand Titan's potential to host prebiotic chemistry or even life (as we know it or as we don't know it). Such results may also inform Dragonfly sampling strategies and data interpretation. In this session we welcome contributions on how organics may be formed, modified or transported in/on Titan's surface and subsurface, in particular those that may be relevant to prebiotic chemistry or metabolic strategies of putative life. Laboratory studies, modeling efforts, mission data analyses, and analogue work will be emphasized, but future instrument or technology developments tailored to explore these processes will also be considered. https://tinyurl.com/4uczer93 Conveners: Morgan Cable (NASA JPL), Baptiste Journaux (UW), Richard Remsing (Rutgers Univ.), and Tuan Vu (NASA JPL) Abstract Deadline: Wednesday, January 10, 2024 1-page abstract template: https://tinyurl.com/yr2677fc AbSciCon 2024 will take place in Providence, RI, USA and online on May 5-10, 2024. 9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9 JUICE OPERATIONS SCIENTIST POSITION AT ESAC Aurora has opened a Juice Operations Scientist position at ESAC to work in the Juice Science Operations Center at the European Space and Astronomy Center (ESAC) in Madrid, Spain. MIRO develops significant scientific, engineering, and/or technology research centers. The purpose of MIRO is to strengthen and develop the research capacity and infrastructure of MSIs in areas of strategic importance and value to NASA's mission and priorities. MIRO awards promote STEM literacy and enhance and sustain the capability of institutions to perform NASA-related research and education. Additionally, MIRO strengthens student participation in research at MSIs to develop and diversify the next generation of the STEM workforce. MIRO awards directly support research pertinent to NASA's five Mission Directorates (MDs) - Aeronautics Research, Exploration Systems Development, Space Operations, Science, and Space Technology. Note: This NOFO is open only to U.S. 4-year colleges/universities, designated by the U.S. Department of Education as Minority Serving Institutions (AANH, AANAPISI, HBCU, HSI, NASNTI, PBI, TCU). Institutions not meeting this requirement are encouraged to collaborate with a lead MSI. The latter (F.23 Seed Funding) continues to be open for proposal submission this year, but the former (F.20) was TBD awaiting this announcement. When it is offered, F.20 SMD Bridge Program will solicit proposals to develop substantial partnerships between institutions historically under-resourced in the NASA funding system - e.g., Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs), Primarily Black Institutions (PBIs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Community Colleges - and very highly research-intensive universities and NASA Centers. We are excited to announce the creation of Explore Titan, Inc! Explore Titan is a nonprofit organization seeking to explore the potential for Titan as the next human destination after Mars. Explore Titan will be the catalyst for discussions about the technologies needed to achieve a human presence on Titan and the predecessor robotic and human missions that are necessary. This organization is dedicated to fostering communication amongst the space flight, planetary science and academic communities in order to identify and develop strategies necessary to put humans on the surface of Titan. The mantra of the new age could be "Mars-to-Titan" and then even "Titan-to-the-Stars." Explore Titan will be the vehicle for ideation and information sharing about Titan. We plan to conduct regular conferences and workshops to foster and motivate discussion. We will also hold outreach events and develop outreach materials that stimulate the imagination about Titan as an exciting, new destination for human exploration!
