The successful candidate will assist the PI in ongoing projects related to planetary sciences in his lab and encouraged to work on individual projects related to planetary sciences and astrobiology using a combination of different techniques including (but not limited to) experimental geochemistry, geobiology, spectroscopy, and geochemical modeling. It is critically important that the candidate has a strong publication record, experience or inclination towards writing grant proposals, and the eagerness to work towards building an actively developing lab with the PI. For example, results from studies of samples of low-albedo asteroids 162173 Ryugu from Hayabusa2 and 101955 Bennu from OSIRIS-REx are currently being shared and discussed. Telescopic, laboratory and theoretical studies of carbon in all its forms have expanded. The SSERVI Carbon in the Solar System workshop series launched presentations and discussions at various venues, enabling an information exchange around the weathering and evolution of carbonaceous compounds in response to thermal processes and irradiation, and what implications these compositions have for understanding material processing in the Solar System. In this session, we will provide a venue for discussion supporting research of the new samples, along with studies of carbon, in various forms, in all locations across the Solar System. Abstracts concerning orbital, rover, modelling, meteorite, and analog studies are all encouraged, as well as abstracts considering future analysis of returned carbonate-bearing samples. Carbonates have long been of interest in Mars exploration due to their potential to provide a key record of the planet's past environmental conditions and identify important habitable environments. While large-scale carbonate deposits predicted for Mars as a result of the CO2-dominated atmosphere have not been identified, more localized detections from landed missions, orbiters, and meteorites have provided important constraints on climatic histories and revealed clues to ancient aqueous environments. Most recently, the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover has investigated a variety of carbonate-bearing volcanic and sedimentary rocks within Jezero crater and sampled them for a future return mission to Earth. This session is open to submissions addressing the origin, geologic context, geochemistry/mineralogy, and astrobiological potential of martian carbonates. The return to the Moon represents an exciting new era for lunar science. Missions such as the Artemis, Chang'e, Chandrayaan, and commercial programs offer incredible opportunities to develop a deeper scientific understanding of our nearest celestial neighbor. This session calls for novel and interdisciplinary approaches to investigating the Moon, not only through existing and future surface-based measurements and remote sensing, but also their integration with laboratory investigations and computational modeling.
