We seek candidates with independent research interests that intersect with one or more faculty within our department and who contribute positively to the diversity of the department through outreach or other means. Both domestic and international applicants are welcome. By the time of their start date at Rice, candidates must have received their Ph.D. degree and be within the first three years of degree conferral. Applicants are requested to develop a proposal for research to be undertaken during the two-year fellowship period. The principal selection criteria are scientific excellence, the applicant's record of research productivity, a clearly expressed research plan to address questions at the forefront of their field of study, research synergies with at least one faculty, and commitment to fostering diversity. The proposed research should encompass independent research ideas and explore new directions beyond the applicant's Ph.D. Preference will be given to applicants whose proposals demonstrate independence and originality, and the potential for collaboration with faculty in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences. Since the publication of the 2015 Astrobiology Strategy, the field has experienced transformative growth, driven by numerous scientific discoveries and technological advancements. "Origins, Worlds, and Life: A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023 - 2032" (OWL) identifies decadal priorities for astrobiology within the context of planetary science missions. Recognizing astrobiology's emergence as a cross-cutting pillar of NASA's scientific and mission portfolios, NASA-DARES 2025 will broaden the scope of astrobiology to reflect the full breadth and potential of astrobiology research and exploration at NASA in support of a growing interdisciplinary community. The solicited system-level technology demonstrations are expected to increase the Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) to close crucial technology gaps and to inform architecture trades, retire or mitigate project risks, and/or decrease fabrication lead times and overall cost in implementing technologies necessary for HWO. The solicited mission architecture studies are expected to advance HWO's Concept Maturity Levels (CMLs) by assessing the benefits, sensitivities, and risks of NASA-provided HWO mission architecture concepts and associated parameter studies that are currently under consideration. Successful responses to this program element will result in firm-fixed-price contracts incrementally funded through milestone payments. This event is about connecting with the cosmos, blending knowledge and art, and the role art can play in space exploration, and features a combination of talks, discussion, and art-making. The theme of this event is "Chronology: How Time Shapes Planets, Perceptions, and People", featuring lead of NASA's VERITAS mission to Venus Dr. Suzanne Smrekar, Los Angeles based conceptual artist Jane Szabo, and other guests! This workshop is also a special collaboration with NASA's Solar System Treks, a public portal where anyone can explore data from space missions. No specific background in either art or science is required. Since 2015 it has made ground-breaking discoveries of the Pluto-Charon system, flown past the small contact KBO binary Arrokoth and collected phase and light curve data for some three dozen additional KBOs and the ice giants. It has also been sampling dust density throughout the Solar System and studying the cosmic optical background. To raise awareness of New Horizon's scientific impact we are beginning a new spotlight seminar series (30 min, fourth week each month) which we invite you to attend online, or watch recorded at your convenience. Our speaker will be Samantha Hasler of MIT and he will be speaking on: "High Phase Angle Observations of Uranus and the Implications for Exoplanet Direct Imaging" Connection Link: https://zoom.us/j/97317697636?pwd=MTAzMjJmNThTeFppR3JoYzlkUXVCQT09 Meeting ID: 973 1769 7636 Passcode: 802327 Calendar for future seminars: https://tinyurl.com/bdepb9yj Recordings are archived and posted at: https://pluto.jhuapl.edu/News-Center/index.php#Spotlight-Presentations 11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11 PLANETARY MEETING CALENDAR ADDITIONS Note: Many face-to-face meetings going forward will have online components. With more than 1 million downloads a year, we're still going strong. The 365 Days of Astronomy podcast is produced at the Planetary Science Institute as part of CosmoQuest. This is a community-contributed show that shares the space community's voices with the world. We've distributed everything from special episodes from the American Astronomical Society, NRAO, NOIRLab, and myriad podcasts, to episodes from individual astronomy lovers. We invite you to contribute your story by emailing info@365daysofastronomy.org More information is available on our website at: https://cosmoquest.org/x/365daysofastronomy/join-in/ Our show costs ~$45 a day to produce. We're bringing back our "Sponsor-a-Day" fundraiser. When folks sponsor 1 (or more) day(s), we'll read out their dedication at the beginning of an episode on a date of their choice. Past sponsorships have been used to share out conferences & events, to commemorate special moments, and to otherwise share about space science while supporting the efforts of others.
